An iconic location, beginners luck, and a spark

A few years ago, sitting in Yosemite Lodge with a couple of friends I watched a 2 minute video on You-Tube about Astrophotography. I took out my cheap Canon Rebel and played with the manual settings for the first time, jacking up the ISO, slowing down the shutter speed and maxing out the aperture on my cheap f-4 kit lens.

While my friends opened their third or fourth beer I ventured out into the valley and found a view of Yosemite Falls. A few minutes later I had somehow managed to capture a shooting star right over the falls. Although this low-res image is not something I would print today, it was highly exciting at the time and inspired me to continue to capture that lighting in a bottle.

Continuing the Pursuit

Now with a few more years of experience and a lot of upgraded gear I continue to pursue unique images around my home base in Western North Carolina and on my travels. I rise early for sunrise, chase the light at sunset, and forgo full nights sleep during the new moon so I can get that milky way shot.

I love exploring the ancient mountains around my home. My goal with photography is to capture the feeling I get when the sky turns to fire or a mountain stream melts away my worries and share that with the world. Hope you enjoy!
